Burana Tower is located in the Chuy Valley near the town of Tokmok, on the site of the ancient city of Balasagun — the capital of the Karakhanid Empire in the 9th–12th centuries. This region was an important hub on the Great Silk Road, linking East and West. The nearby village of Don-Aryk preserves the traditional nomadic lifestyle of the Kyrgyz people.
