Tashkent's peer
The city's age of 2,200 years
These few words can roughly describe Shymkent — Kazakhstan's third metropolis and one of the country's oldest cities. From all sides, it is surrounded by the fertile foothills of the Ugam Range, between the Sayram and Badam rivers, and its history spans over 2,200 years.
Of course, the city itself is also multifaceted, and despite the fact that its age has surpassed two millennia, it looks very modern.
Here, everything is done on a grand scale, yet ancient shrines have also been preserved, where time seems to have stood still for centuries. There is a wealth of entertainment for every taste: from strolling through shady dendrology parks and visiting the "Shym Qala" historical and cultural complex to discovering the rich traditions and crafts of the southern region.
But it is not only for urban adventures that one should come here — the surroundings of Shymkent are incredibly rich in natural and historical attractions.
The ancient settlement of "Shym Qala" — an open-air museum with cultural layers reaching 14 metres deep, the Aksu-Zhabagly nature reserves with rare tulips, sacred sites and mausoleums in the vicinity of Sayram, as well as unique natural landscapes — all this and much more awaits travelers here.
